Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18
CHAPTER 18
अथ अष्टादशः अध्यायः । मोक्ष संन्यास योगः ।
Now Chapter Eighteen. THE YOGA OF LIBERATION BY RENUNCIATION.
![]() |
| Lord Krishna |
This chapter sums up the doctrine of the whole of the Gita and also the whole of the Vedic doctrine. What was said in the previous discourses has also been summarised. This discourse starts with Arjuna's question on the difference between sannyasa and tyaga. The Lord explains that Sannyasa or renunciation, lies in the renunciation of selfish actions, and even more in the renunciation of the desire or greed for the fruits of any action. In tyaga, you engage yourself in performing actions but renouncing attachment and greed. True and proper renunciation is giving up selfishness and attachment while performing one’s legitimate duties.
If one performs actions by renouncing egoism and attachment and surrendering all desire for selfish, personal gain, one can qualify for the highest liberation.
VERSE 18.1
अर्जुनः
उवाच ।
संन्यासस्य
महा बाहो तत्त्वम् इच्छामि
वेदितुम् ।
त्यागस्य
च हृषीकेश पृथक् केशि निषूदन
॥ १८ १॥
Aphorism
Arjuna said: O mighty-armed, I wish to know the nature of Sannyasa and the nature of Tyaga(relinquishment), O Hrishikesha, and their difference, O slayer of Keshi.
Note:
Hrishikesha: An epithet of Krishna, meaning ‘master of senses’.
Keshinishudana: An
epithet of Krishna, meaning ‘slayer of Keshi’. Keshi
was an asura whom the Lord slew.
Sannyasa (renunciation of action) and tyaga (renunciation of the fruits of action) both denote renunciation, but they are not strictly synonymous throughout the Bhagavad Gita. While used somewhat interchangeably in earlier chapters, Chapter 18 explicitly clarifies their distinction: sannyasa entails the abandonment of desire-driven actions (kamya karma), whereas tyaga refers to performing one’s prescribed duties while relinquishing the desire for their fruits (karma-phala).
The practice of karma yoga (action performed without attachment) applies to seekers who are purifying the mind. In contrast, those fully established in the path of knowledge (jnana yoga) are no longer bound by the obligation of prescribed duties, as their sense of agency dissolves in self-knowledge. For the traditional sannyasi, prescribed religious rites, ceremonies, and worldly obligations are formally renounced.
Ultimately, the performance of prescribed duties through karma yoga leads to chitta-shuddhi (purification of the mind/heart), which prepares the seeker for jnana (knowledge). In this way, Chapter 18 provides a comprehensive summary of the entire Gita and the essence of Vedic philosophy.

VERSE 18.2
Aphorism
The Lord said: The giving up of activities that are based on material desire is known by sages as sannyasa. And giving up the results of all activities is what the wise call tyaga.
Note:
Sannyasa is closely aligned with Jnana Yoga (the Path of Knowledge). In traditional asceticism, a sannyasi often withdraws to a secluded place—such as a forest or monastery—to meditate free from external distractions, undergoing austerities while detachment from bodily needs develops naturally through self-knowledge.
Tyaga refers to the practice of Nishkama Karma—performing prescribed actions without attachment to their fruits (karma-phala). It also means offering all actions as a dedication to the Supreme Being (Ishvararpana), without claiming personal agency or ownership. This is the essence of Karma Yoga.
While both terms share the general concept of renunciation, the Gita clarifies their distinct roles: traditional sannyasa often emphasizes the abandonment of worldly ties and desire-driven actions (kamya karma), whereas tyaga is the inner relinquishment of the fruits and agency of action while remaining active in duty. As noted in the Gita, physical renunciation without mental detachment is considerably more difficult and painful than Karma Yoga (Gita 5.6). Nevertheless, when practiced correctly with true detachment, both paths lead to the exact same spiritual liberation (Chapter 5, Verse 5).

त्याज्यम्
दोषवत् इति एके कर्म प्राहुः
मनीषिणः ।
यज्ञ
दान तपः कर्म न त्याज्यम् इति
च अपरे ॥ १८ ३॥
Aphorism
Some learned men declare that all works should be relinquished as evil; others say that works of sacrifice, charity, and austerity should not be given up.
Note:
Some learned men, etc, = This follows the doctrine of Sankya philosophy.
According to Shankara, action and knowledge are incompatible. Action denotes diversity, such as the agent, the instrument of action, and the result. But a man endowed with knowledge sees only unity. Therefore, all actions should be relinquished.
Action spoken of in this verse includes religious rites, ceremonies, and sacrifices prescribed in the Vedas, and works of public welfare such as building a road, digging a public well, etc.
Meaning
त्याज्यम् — should be abandoned; दोषवत् — full of evil; इति — thus; एके — some; कर्म — karma, action; प्राहुः — say; मनीषिणः — the wise; यज्ञ — sacrifice; दान — charity; तपः — austerity; कर्म — action; न — not; त्याज्यम् — to be abandoned; इति — thus; च — and; अपरे — others.

is answering the question asked by Arjuna in Verse 1.
The
threefold relinquishment applies only to Karma Yogis who are ignorant
about the self.
Threefold = Three gunas: sattva, rajas, and tamas.
Bharatas
= Arjuna is a descendant of the Bharata dynasty.
Meaning
निश्चयम् — conclusion; शृणु — listen; मे — my; तत्र — there; त्यागे — renunciation; भरतसत्तम — O!
Best of Bharatas; त्यागः — renunciation;

Aphorism
Even these activities should be done without attachment and expectation of result. O Partha. This is My conclusive final judgment.
Note:
Acts of sacrifice (yajna), charity (dana), and austerity (tapas) should not be abandoned, as they are prescribed as obligatory duties by the scriptures. Furthermore, when performed without attachment or desire for results, these actions purify the mind (chitta-shuddhi), paving the way for spiritual knowledge (jnana).
Meaning
एतानि — these; अपि — also; तु — indeed; कर्माणि — actions; सङ्गम् — attachment; त्यक्त्वा — having abandoned; फलानि — fruits; च — and; कर्तव्यानि — to be done (obligatory); इति — thus; मे — my; पार्थ — Partha;

तु संन्यासः कर्मणः न उपपद्यते
।
मोहात्
तस्य परित्यागः तामसः परिकीर्तितः
॥ १८ ७॥
Aphorism
Renunciation of prescribed duties is improper. If one relinquishes prescribed duties because of illusion, such renunciation is said to be in the mode of inertia.
Note:
Prescribed duties = These are daily worship and devotions for every aspirant. For householders, the duties include feeding animals, showing hospitality to guests, and sanyasis. Through the performance of prescribed duties, the aspirant’s heart becomes pure, and it will lead him to the path of knowledge.

Aphorism
He who relinquishes an action from fear of physical suffering, saying “painful,” and relinquishes does so in the mode of passion; he does not benefit from the relinquishment.
Note:
The verse addresses a common psychological trap: abandoning our duties simply because they are difficult, uncomfortable, or physically painful, and framing that avoidance as "spiritual renunciation."
Meaning

Aphorism
The wise renouncer (tyagi), steadfast in the mode of goodness (sattva) and free from all doubts, feels neither aversion toward disagreeable duties nor attachment toward agreeable ones.
Note:
A seeker who performs duties in this selfless manner attains purity of mind (chitta-shuddhi) and becomes fit for Self-knowledge. Gradually, as detachment deepens, physical actions naturally drop away, leading to complete devotion to the path of knowledge (jnana-nishta).

Aphorism
O! Mighty-armed Arjuna, learn from me the five causes declared in the Sankhya system for the accomplishment of all actions, which puts an end to all actions.
Note:
Sankhya = The word Sankhya in this text refers to Vedanta and not the Sankhya philosophy expounded by Sage Kapila. Sankhya means analytical study.
The accomplishment of all the actions = Karma resulting from action is put to an end if the action is performed without attachment to the result. There is another interpretation to this – all actions cease when the knowledge of the Self is gained through the study of Vedanta,
Five causes will be mentioned in the next verse.

Note:
The five causes mentioned in the previous verse are detailed here.
Body = This is the seat of the Self, the center of the action, and through which are manifested desire, hatred, happiness, misery, and so on.

यस्य
न अहङ्कृतः भावः बुद्धिः यस्य
न लिप्यते ।
हत्वा
अपि सः इमान् लोकान् न हन्ति
न निबध्यते ॥ १८ १७॥
Aphorism
He who is free from the sense of egoism, whose intellect is untainted—even though he slays these people, he slays not, nor is he bound.
Note:
"Though he slays"
It is the body/mind complex that acts; the Self (Atman) is merely a non-participating witness (Sakshi). So long as there is no personal desire or selfish motivation, and the action is performed strictly as the fulfillment of selfless duty (dharma), the slaying does not bind or affect the Self.
"Whose understanding is undefiled"
He neither misidentifies the Self with the physical body nor attributes the actions performed by the body—instigated by the gunas (modes of nature)—to the Self. His intellect remains untainted by the illusion of agency.
"Free from the feeling of ego"
Freedom from the feeling of ego (ahankara) is cultivated through spiritual discipline: studying sacred scriptures (Svadhyaya), receiving guidance from a competent teacher (Guru), practicing intense devotion (Bhakti), and maintaining continuous self-inquiry (Atma-vichara).
Meaning
With sandhi:यस्य — of whom; न — not; अहङ्कृतः — egoistic; भावः — notion; बुद्धिः — reason; यस्य — of whom; न — not; लिप्यते — is affected; हत्वा — having slain; अपि — also; सः — he; इमान् — these; लोकान् — world; न — not; हन्ति — slays; न — not; निबध्यते — is bound;

ज्ञानम्
ज्ञेयम् परिज्ञाता त्रिविधा

करणम्

Aphorism
Knowledge, the knowable, and the knower are the three factors that motivate action; the senses, the work, and the doer are the three constituents of action.
Notes:
Knowledge = any knowledge in general.
Knower = the experiencer, under ignorance, partakes in the nature of the upadhi.
The senses = Different organs of perception externally and mind and
understanding internally.
Meaning
ज्ञानम् — the
knowledge; ज्ञेयम् — the
knowable; परिज्ञाता — the
knower;

Aphorism
Knowledge, action, and the doer are declared to be of three kinds, according to the distinction of gunas. Hear of them.
Note:
The concept of the gunas (modes of nature) originated in the Samkhya philosophy propounded by Sage Kapila and was subsequently adopted by Vedanta. Because knowledge, action, and the doer are all governed by the gunas, they belong entirely to the realm of Prakriti (nature/matter) and have no inherent connection to the Self (Atman).
Meaning
ज्ञानम् — knowledge; कर्म — action; च —and; कर्ता — doer; च — and; त्रिधा — threefold; एव — even; गुण — modes; भेदतः — difference; प्रोच्यते — is said; गुण — modes; सङ्ख्याने — enumeration; यथावत् — exactly; शृणु — listen; तानि — these; अपि — even.

प्रवृत्तिम्
च निवृत्तिम् च कार्य अकार्ये

Aphorism
That which sees the law of action and the law of inaction, aught to be done and aught not to be done, fear and fearlessness, what binds the spirit of man and what sets it free, that understanding is sattvic, O Partha.
Notes:
Pravritti refers to action driven by desire (sakama karma) that binds one to the cycle of rebirth (samsara).
The Karma Kanda (ritualistic portion) of the Vedas prescribes this path for worldly prosperity and heavenly realms.
Nivritti Marga (Path of Renunciation):
Nivritti refers to the path of turning away from worldly desires, leading to Moksha (Liberation), the highest human goal (purushartha).
Prescribed in the Jnana Kanda (Upanishads). It is associated with Sannyasa (renunciation) and Akarma (actionless self-abidance / ego-free action).
Nature of Knowledge (Jnana):
Knowledge, at the level of the mind, is a vritti (a state or modification of the intellect / buddhi). It changes according to the dominant guna.
The threefold classification of knowledge—Sattviki (seeing unity in diversity), Rajasi (seeing separation and multiplicity), and Tamasi (irrational attachment to a single part as the whole)—is described in Bhagavad Gita 18.20–22.
Firmness (Dhriti - धृति):
Dhriti is the sustained concentration, resolve, or willpower of the intellect (buddhi). Like jnana, it manifests as Sattviki, Rajasi, or Tamasi based on what holds one's mind (BG 18.33–35).
Duty & Ethics (Karya & Akarya):
Karya (What is to be done): Actions enjoined by scriptural authority (shastra) and social/cosmic ethics (dharma).
Akarya (What is to be avoided): Actions prohibited by scripture, destructive to harmony, or driven purely by unbridled desire and ego.

सा पार्थ तामसी ॥ १८ ३२॥
Aphorism
The understanding enveloped in darkness regards the wrong as right and reverses all values; that, O Partha, is tamasic.
Notes:
Key Features of Tamasic Intellect:
Inversion of Values: A tamasic mind calls darkness light, destructive habits healthy, and delusion truth. It considers harmful, selfish, or lazy behaviors to be beneficial or superior.
Perverted Logic: Unlike Rajasic intellect, which feels conflicted or doubtful about duty, Tamasic intellect is confidently wrong. It builds rationalizations to justify unrighteousness (adharma).
Obstruction to Growth: Because it believes bad is good, a person driven by Tamasic Buddhi sees no need to change or grow, locking one into inertia, stubbornness, and self-destruction.
Meaning
अधर्मम् — wrong; धर्मम् — right; इति — thus; या — which; मन्यते — thinks; तमसा — with mode of inertia; आवृता — covered; सर्व — all; अर्थान् — things; विपरीतान् — perverted; च — and; बुद्धिः — intellect; सा — that; पार्थ— Partha; तामसी— mode of inertia;

Aphorism
But that firmness, O Arjuna, by which one holds fast to duty, pleasure, and wealth out of intense attachment and desire for its fruits, indicates the mode of passion.
Notes:
This verse explains that having strong discipline or willpower isn't automatically a noble or spiritual trait on its own. If your hard work and determination are driven primarily by "What's in it for me?"—desiring material rewards, status, or sensory pleasures—your perseverance is rooted in the mode of passion (Rajas).

Aphorism
That which feels like poison at first, but turns to nectar in the end—happiness born of the serene self-realization of the soul—is said to be in the mode of goodness.
Notes:
Like poison at first: This happiness is attained through self-knowledge, renunciation of worldly attachments, meditation, and mental focus—all of which demand immense effort and discipline in the beginning.

Aphorism
That happiness which springs from the contact of the senses with their objects feels like nectar at first, but turns to poison in the end; such pleasure is said to be in the mode of passion
Notes:
Like nectar at first: Chasing external desires (food, luxury, status) brings a quick rush of delight.
Poison in the end: Because worldly pleasures are temporary, they inevitably leave behind craving, anxiety, health problems, or emotional emptiness.
Meaning

Aphorism
That happiness which deludes the self both in the beginning and in the end—arising from sleep, laziness, and negligence—is declared to be in the mode of ignorance. (tamas).
Notes:
The Illusion: It feels satisfying only because it numbs reality through oversleeping, laziness, intoxication, or procrastination.
The Trap ("Start to Finish"): Unlike Rajasic pleasure (sweet first, bitter later), Tamasic pleasure is destructive from beginning to end—it keeps the mind stagnant, dulls intellect, and leads to long-term regret.
It is false peace born from escaping responsibility rather than mastering oneself.
Meaning
यत् — which; अग्रे — in the beginning; च — and; अनुबन्धे — in the consequence; च — and; सुखम् — happiness; मोहनम् —delusive; आत्मनः —of the self; निद्रा — sleep; आलस्य — lazyness; प्रमाद — negligence; उत्थम् — from them; तत् — that; तामसम् — mode of inertia; उदाहृतम् — is called.

There is no being on earth, nor among the Shining Ones in heaven, that is free from these three qualities born of nature.

Aphorism
The duties of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are distributed according to the qualities (gunas) born of their own nature.
Notes:
Traditional Hindu philosophy outlines four Varnas (social classes): Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. The scriptures assign different duties to these groups based on their inherent nature (svabhava). A Brahmin's nature is dominated by Sattva (purity and knowledge), a Kshatriya's by Rajas (passion and action) with Sattva, a Vaishya's by Rajas driven by Tamas (desire and material activity), and a Shudra's by Tamas (inertia and labor).

असक्त
बुद्धिः सर्वत्र जित आत्मा

नैष्कर्म्य
सिद्धिम् परमाम् संन्यासेन
अधिगच्छति ॥ १८ ४९॥
Aphorism
One whose intellect is everywhere unattached, whose self is subdued, and who is free from desires attains through renunciation the supreme perfection of freedom from action.
Note:
The Three Qualifications of a Seeker
The first half of the verse establishes the state of inner readiness (Adhikari) required for absolute freedom:
"Intellect is everywhere unattached" (Asakta-buddhih sarvatra): The discriminative faculty (Buddhi) no longer seeks fulfillment in external objects, relationships, or outcomes. Unattachment means interacting with the world without becoming mentally entangled or dependent on its results for happiness.
"Whose self is subdued" (Jitatma): The lower self—comprising the mind, senses, and body—has been brought under total mastery. The individual is no longer driven by instinctive impulses, sensory cravings, or emotional turbulence.
"Free from desires" (Vigata-sprihah): All personal longings (Spriha) for worldly or heavenly rewards have dissolved. When the mind recognizes that outer objects cannot grant lasting peace, desire naturally subsides.
The Path: True Renunciation (Sannyasa)
In Advaita Vedantic philosophy (specifically Shankara’s commentary), renunciation here does not merely mean giving up physical duties or retiring to a forest. Rather, it refers to mental renunciation (Jnana-sannyasa)—renouncing the egoistic delusion of agency: the false idea "I am the doer of action."
The Goal: Freedom from Action (Naishkarmya-Siddhi)
The phrase "supreme perfection of freedom from action" (Naiṣkarmya-siddhiṁ paramām) is the core philosophical concept of this verse: It is the realization that one's true nature—the Atman (Self)—is intrinsically pure, unchanging, and actionless.
When a seeker recognizes "I am the Pure Awareness in whose presence the mind and body act, but I myself perform no action," they become free from the binding law of karma (cause and effect). This state of unbroken self-realization is Naishkarmya-siddhi.
Meaning

Aphorism
O Kaunteya, learn from Me how one who has attained this perfection can attain the highest state of wisdom, Brahman, which I shall now summarize.
Notes:
Attaining Perfection: In this state, the body and senses are fully prepared for Self-knowledge as a result of the Lord’s grace, earned through the performance of prescribed duties. This serves as a prelude to jnana-nishta (steadfast devotion to knowledge), by which one ultimately attains Brahman.
Meaning
सिद्धिम् — perfection; प्राप्तः — attained; यथा — as; ब्रह्म — Brahman; तथा — so; आप्नोति — obtains; निबोध — learn; मे — of me; समासेन — by summary; एव — indeed; कौन्तेय — O Kauntaya; निष्ठा — state; ज्ञानस्य — of wisdom; या — or; परा — the highest.

Aphorism
Endowed with a purified intellect, subduing the mind with firm resolve, relinquishing sound and other sense objects, and casting aside both attachment and aversion—
Note:
Pure Intelligence: An intellect free from doubt, delusion, and distraction, remaining firmly established in its goal. Just as a clean mirror reflects light clearly, a purified intellect reflects the light of Pure Consciousness without distortion, recognizing the ultimate identity of the Atman (Self) and Brahman.
Renounced Sound (and Other Sense Objects): Turning the senses away from worldly attractions and relinquishing all sensory pleasures beyond what is strictly necessary for basic physical sustenance.
Liking and Disliking (Attachment and Aversion): Freedom from personal attraction (Raga) and aversion (Dvesha)—even toward the basic necessities required to sustain the body.
Meaning
बुद्ध्या — intellect; विशुद्धया — by purified; युक्तः — endowed with; धृत्या — firmness; आत्मानम् — self; नियम्य — having controlled; च — and; शब्दादीन् — beginning with sound; विषयान् — objects; त्यक्त्वा — having abandoned; राग — passion; द्वेषौ — hatred; व्युदस्य — casting aside; च — and.

Aphorism
Resorting to solitude, eating but limited, controlling speech, body, and mind, ever-engaged in meditation and concentration, taking refuge in dispassion;
Note:
Resorting to Solitude and Eating Lightly(विविक्त सेवी लघु आशी): Seeking quiet environments and controlling one's food intake are essential for mental purity, as they eliminate distraction, drowsiness, and other obstacles to meditation. Suitable places for solitude include a forest, a quiet riverbank, a mountain cave, or a secluded place of worship.
Ever Engaged in Meditation: This implies that the aspirant seeking Self-knowledge sets aside all secondary rituals, ceremonies, and worldly pursuits, remaining continuously dedicated to meditation and one-pointed concentration.
Meditation (Dhyana): Continuous contemplation upon the true, unconditioned nature of the Self (Atman). At this advanced stage of Jnana Yoga, the practitioner moves beyond verbal practices such as Japa (repetition of sacred names or mantras), chanting hymns, or reciting formulas.
Concentration: The total one-pointedness of the mind focused exclusively on the Self.
Meaning
विविक्त — solitude; सेवी — serves; लघु — light; आशी — eats; यत — controlled; वाक् — speech; काय — body; मानसः — mind; ध्यान — meditation; योग — yoga; परः — supreme; नित्यम् — always; वैराग्यम् — dispassion; समुपाश्रितः — taking refuge in.

Aphorism
Having cast aside egoism, power, arrogance, desire, anger, and possessiveness, and being selfless and peaceful, one becomes fit to attain oneness with Brahman.
Note:
Having Cast Aside Possessiveness: This is the distinguishing mark of a renunciate (Sannyasi) of the highest order (Paramahamsa), who does not retain the slightest personal possession, relying solely on what is strictly necessary for the bare sustenance of the body.
Egoism (Ahamkara): The primary delusion of identifying the true Self (Atman) with the physical body, senses, and intellect.
Power (Balam): Impulsive force driven by passion (Rajas) and desire (Kama), rather than natural physical vitality. Innate physical strength is natural to the body and cannot be abandoned, whereas egoistic or tyrannical power must be relinquished.
Meaning
अहङ्कारम् — egoism; बलम् — power; दर्पम् — arrogance; कामम् — desire; क्रोधम् — anger; परिग्रहम् — selfishness; विमुच्य — having abandoned; निर्ममः — free from possessiveness, without the sense of "mine"; शान्तः — peaceful; ब्रह्म — Brahman; भूयाय — for oneness; कल्पते — is fit.

Aphorism
Established in Brahman, cheerful in spirit, he neither grieves nor craves. Viewing all beings with an equal eye, he gains supreme devotion to Me.
Notes:
Established in Brahman (Brahma-bhūta): Realizing the non-difference between the individual Self (Atman) and Brahman (Aham Brahmasmi). Rather than creating a new mental connection, this is the experiential discovery of one’s pre-existing divine nature.
Neither Grieves Nor Craves: Because one no longer identifies with the body, mind, or senses, there is no sense of personal loss (soka) to grieve, nor any missing fulfillment (kanksha) to crave.
With an Equal Eye: Beholding the same non-dual Consciousness in all beings, one regards the joy and suffering of others with equal empathy, as if it were one's own (Atma-aupamya).
Supreme Devotion to Me (Parām Bhaktim): Refers to Jnana-lakshana-bhakti—the devotion characterized by direct Knowledge. This connects to Bhagavad Gita 7.16–17, where Krishna identifies the Seeker of Knowledge (Jnani) as the highest of the four types of devotees, whose devotion is rooted in non-separateness.
Meaning
ब्रह्म — Brahman; भूतः — become; प्रसन्न — tranquil; आत्मा — self; न — not; शोचति — grieves; न — not; काङ्क्षति — desires; समः — equal; सर्वेषु — among all; भूतेषु — beings; मत् — in me; भक्तिम् — devotion; लभते — obtains; पराम् — highest.

Aphorism
Through devotion he comes to know Me in truth—who and what I truly am. Then, knowing Me in truth, he enters into My being at once.
Note:
He knows Me: He knows that the Lord alone is the essence of the diverse manifestations caused by His Maya. He knows that the Lord is without the names and forms created by Maya. Knowing and entering are not two separate acts, but happen simultaneously.

Aphorism
The Lord dwells in the heart of all beings, O Arjuna, causing all living entities—who are mounted as if upon a machine—to revolve by His illusive power (māyā).
Note:
Mounted on a machine (yantrārūḍhāni): Just as puppets on a stage are moved by a wire-puller hidden behind a screen, all beings—mounted upon the machine of the body (prakṛti)—are impelled to act under the direction of the Lord seated within their hearts. (Compare Chapter 9, Verse 10.)
Maya: Illusory power.
Meaning
ईश्वरः — the Lord; सर्व — all; भूतानाम् — of all beeings; हृत् देशे — heart place; अर्जुन — Arjuna; तिष्ठति — sits; भ्रामयन् — turning; सर्व — all; भूतानि — beings; यन्त्र — machine; आरूढानि — mounted; मायया — by illusion.

इति

Aphorism
You possess wisdom. I have revealed secrets deeper than secrecy itself; having considered this fully, act as you wish.
Notes:
Secret: Profound.
Act as you wish: It is clear that the Lord does not intend to command Arjuna to act, because all living beings must face the consequences of their actions in this life or the next. If an action were performed directly under the Lord's command, the Lord would have to take responsibility for it rather than the soul.
The scriptures show what is right, but it is up to the individual to accept or reject it.
In Karma-yoga, devotion and surrender to the Lord are essential.
Meaning
इति — thus; ते — you; ज्ञानम् — wisdom; आख्यातम् — declared; गुह्यात् — than the secret; गुह्यतरं — more secret; मया — by me; विमृश्य — having thought; एतत् — this; अशेषेण — without remainder; यथा — as; इच्छसि — (you) wish; तथा — so; कुरु — do.

मत्
मनाः भव मत् भक्तः मत् याजी

प्रियः असि मे ॥ १८ ६५॥
Aphorism
ix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, sacrifice to Me, and bow down before Me; thus you shall come to Me. Truly, I promise you this, for you are dear to Me.
Notes:
The path of Karma-yoga is intended for all aspiring devotees, not just for Arjuna. A devotee must have unwavering faith in the Lord’s promise and view Him as the highest and sole refuge. This teaching applies equally to those on the path of renunciation (Jnana-yoga), as Krishna affirms in the following verse
Meaning
मत् — on me; मनाः — mind (fixed); भव — be; मत् — my; भक्तः — devotee; मत् — to me; याजी — sacrifice; माम् — me; नमस्कुरु — salute; माम् — to me; एव — indeed; एष्यसि — (you) shall come; सत्यम् — truth; ते — to you;

VERSE 18.66
सर्व
धर्मान् परित्यज्य माम् एकम्
शरणम् व्रज ।
अहम्
त्वा सर्व पापेभ्यः मोक्ष्ययिष्यामि
मा शुचः ॥ १८ ६६॥
Aphorism
Abandoning all duties, take refuge in Me alone; do not grieve, for I shall liberate you from all sins.
Notes:
All duties: "All duties" here encompasses both righteous and unrighteous actions, as well as actions prescribed or forbidden by the scriptures. Both righteous and unrighteous actions produce karmic bondage, which is incompatible with the ultimate liberation sought here.
All sins: Sins are incurred by neglecting prescribed duties and performing actions forbidden in the scriptures. A devotee should recognize that the Lord's Maya creates the dualistic illusion of good and evil, pleasure and pain, leading human beings to accept one and reject the other.
Shankara’s View: The Gita commentator Adi Shankara holds that supreme liberation is attained only through the Knowledge of Brahman (Jnana), not by performing action (Karma). However, performing unselfish service dedicated to the Lord purifies the mind, leading to this essential knowledge. Steadfast devotion to Knowledge cannot be combined directly with action (Karma-Sannyasa).
The Supreme Teaching: Throughout the dialogue, the Lord urges Arjuna to keep his mind fixed on Him while performing his duty as a Kshatriya to fight. At this climax, however, the Lord reveals the ultimate teaching: Arjuna may transcend his kula-dharma (caste or social duty) and completely surrender to Him alone. This represents the pinnacle of the Gita's message.
Qualifications for Transmission: With this verse, the core teachings of the Gita come to a close. The Lord then outlines the qualifications for sharing and receiving this sacred wisdom (Verse 18.67).
Meaning
सर्व — all; धर्मान् — duties; परित्यज्य — having abandoned; माम् — to me; एकम् — one; शरणम् — refuge; व्रज — come speedily; अहम् — I; त्वा — you; सर्व — all; पापेभ्यः — from sins; मोक्ष्ययिष्यामि — will liberate; मा — not; शुचः — grieve.

Aphorism
You must never speak of this to one who lacks austerity, who is without devotion, who has no desire to listen, or who speaks ill of Me.
Notes:
Now the Lord begins to describe who is eligible to receive the knowledge of the Gita (adhikāri) and who is not.
The teachings of the Gita should not be imparted to the following individuals:
One who lacks austerity in life. One who lacks devotion to the Lord and the spiritual teacher (guru).
One who has no desire or eagerness to listen to the Gita.
One who speaks ill of the Lord—who views Him as a mere ordinary human being and fails to recognize His divine nature. One who has no desire or eagerness to listen to the Gita.
One who speaks ill of the Lord—who views Him as a mere ordinary human being and fails to recognize His divine nature.
Meaning

यः इदम् परमम् गुह्यम् मत् भक्तेषु अभिधास्यति ।
भक्तिम् मयि पराम् कृत्वा माम् एव एष्यति असंशयः ॥ १८ ६८॥
Aphorism
Whoever teaches this supreme secret to My devotees, having offered the highest devotion to Me, shall come to Me without a doubt.
Notes:
Supreme Secret: This refers to the profound subject matter of the Bhagavad Gita.
Qualification of the Teacher: The teacher must maintain the conviction that sharing these teachings is a direct act of service to the Lord. Crucially, both the teacher and the student of the Gita must possess unwavering devotion. To emphasize the spiritual merit of teaching the Gita, the Lord declares that the teacher will ultimately attain Him through this service.
Devotion across Spiritual Paths: Devotion and bhakti (love of God) are synonymous. The scriptures affirm that bhakti is essential for liberation, whether one follows the path of action (Karma-yoga) or knowledge (Jnana-yoga). Furthermore, devotion to a personal God (Ishvara) is universally acknowledged to be more accessible than meditation on the unmanifest, impersonal Brahman.
Shankara’s Perspective on Bhakti: Even Adi Shankara, the foremost non-dualist, underscores the necessity of devotion. In verse 31 of the Vivekachudamani, he states:
"Among all means for liberation, devotion (bhakti) holds the supreme place. The continuous search for one’s true nature is said to be devotion."
This definition integrates seamlessly into the Advaita (non-dualist) framework.
Historical & Devotional Legacy: From around the 6th to 9th centuries CE, the Bhakti movement surged across Southern India. The Alvars (devotees of Vishnu) and Nayanars (devotees of Shiva) composed thousands of emotionally resonant Tamil verses—later venerated as the Tamil Vedas—capable of melting hearts and drawing souls closer to the Divine. A primary text detailing these lives, the Periya Puranam, deeply influenced Ramana Maharshi, one of the 20th century's greatest sages. Reading it at age sixteen ignited the spiritual fervor that led directly to his renunciation and enlightenment.
Shankara’s Legacy of Personal Devotion: This legacy of personal devotion cannot be overlooked. According to tradition, Shankara visited and established numerous temples, authored dozens of stotras (hymns) dedicated to various deities, and founded four mathas (monasteries), each centered on a personal form of God.
Conclusion: Bhakti-yoga is fully compatible with—and essential to—both the path of action (Karma-yoga) and the path of knowledge (Jnana-yoga).
Meaning
यः — who; इदम् — this; परमम् — highest; गुह्यम् — secret; मत् — my; भक्तेषु — among devotees; अभिधास्यति — shall declare; भक्तिम् — devotion; मयि — for me; पराम् — highest; कृत्वा — having done; माम् — to me; एव — indeed; एष्यति — shall come; असंशयः — no doubt.

Aphorism
And whoever studies this sacred dialogue of ours worships Me through the sacrifice of knowledge (Jnana-Yajna). Such is My resolve.
Notes:
Knowledge as a Sacrifice (Jnana-Yajna): Various forms of sacrifice (yajna) are described in Chapter 4 of the Bhagavad Gita. In Chapter 4, Verse 33, Krishna declares that the sacrifice of knowledge is superior to any material sacrifice ("Better than the sacrifice of material possessions is the sacrifice of knowledge").
According to scriptural commentary, spiritual practices (yajnäs or japas) are categorized into four levels of subtle refinement:
Vidhi-Yajna (Ritual Sacrifice): Performed externally with physical offerings and prescribed rules.
Vaikhari / Loud Japa: Vocal prayer or mantra repetition uttered audibly.
Upamsu Japa: Prayer uttered softly or in a low whisper.
Manasa Japa: Internal prayer offered purely within the mind.
Jnana-Yajna (the sacrifice of wisdom) falls under the category of Manasa (mental) offerings, making it the highest form of worship.
Thus, the study and contemplation of the Bhagavad Gita (Gita-Shastra) itself is extolled as a noble Jnana-Yajna.

Notes:
Memory: The awakening of knowledge regarding the true nature of the Self.
Delusion: Beginningless ignorance, which is the root cause of samsara (the cycle of birth and death).
