Dakshinamurthy Stotram 

In this text, the verses (slokas)  are shown in blue followed by transliteration which is based on iTrans encoding. Transliteration has limited use. You have to learn the encoding. There is a learning curve. Learning to read and write Devanagari will only take two more days than learning the iTrans encoding. With the knowledge of Devanagari scripts, there is no risk of mispronunciation.


Dhyana Slokas

The Dhyana Slokas for the Dakshinamurthy Stotram was written by Swayamprakasha Swami. These slokas are so popular that I included them in this document.

Dhyana Sloka 1

मौन व्याख्या प्रकटित पर ब्रह्म तत्त्वं युवानं
वर्षिष्ठां ते वसद् ऋषिगणैः आवृतं ब्रह्म निष्ठैः ।
आचार्येन्द्रं करकलित चिन्मुद्रम् आनंद मूर्तिं
स्व आत्म आरामं मुदित वदनं दक्षिणा मूर्तिम् ईडे ॥१॥

mauna vyAkhyA prakaTita para brahma tattvaM yuvAnaM
varShiShThAM te vasad RRiShigaNaiH AvRRitaM brahma niShThaiH |
AcAryendraM karakalita cinmudram AnaMda mUrtiM
sva Atma ArAmaM mudita vadanaM dakShiNA mUrtim IDe ||1||

Meaning

I praise Dakshinamurthy, who is in the form of a young person, silently expounding the non-duality of Brahman, while sitting surrounded by old and great seers who are absorbed in contemplation of Brahman, with the hands of the teacher displaying Chinmudra (union of thumb and the fore-finger – symbol of non-duality of Atman and Brahman) and who is blissful; who is happy just by himself and is endowed with with a charming countenance.

ஒரு இளைஞனின் வடிவத்தில் இருக்கும் தட்சிணாமூர்த்தியை, பிரம்மத்தின் இருமையற்ற தன்மையை மௌனமாக விளக்கி, பிரம்மத்தைப் பற்றி சிந்திப்பதில்   ஈடுபட்டிருக்கும் பழைய மற்றும் பெரிய ஞானிகளால்  சூழப்பட்டிருக்கும் போது, ​​ஆசிரியர்  கைகளால் சின்முத்திரையைக் காண்பித்துக்கொண்டு  ( கட்டைவிரல் மற்றும் முன் விரல் ஒன்றை ஒன்று தொட்டுக்கொண்டு இருப்பது சின்முத்திரை ஆகும் - ஆத்மா மற்றும் பிரம்மத்தின் இருமையற்ற தன்மையின் சின்னம்) அவர் ஆனந்தமானவர்; அவர் தானாகவே மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருக்கிறார், மேலும் ஒரு அழகான முகத்துடன் இருக்கிறார்.

Notes:

Dakshinamurthy is an aspect of Shiva as a guru (teacher) of all types of knowledge. 

In every Siva temple Dakshinamurthy is installed facing south, unlike all other deities. Dakshinamurthy means the deity facing south.

The great seer Ramana Maharshi, has said in letter 89: one meaning of Dakshina is efficient; another meaning is ‘in the heart on the right side of the body’; Amurthy ’means Formlessness'. According to him, Dakshinamurthy is "shapelessness situated on the right side of the heart".

Chinmudra indicates the identity of Supreme Self (Brahman) and the individual Self. 

Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana and Sanatkumara are the sages sitting around him to learn the Parabrahma Tattvam, the reality of the Supreme Self. They were the foremost conversant with the study of Yoga. 

Sanatkumara wrote Sanatkumara Samhita. 

Dhyana Sloka 2

वट विटपि समीपे भूमि भागे निषण्णं
सकल मुनि जनानां ज्ञान दातारम् आरात् ।
त्रि भुवन गुरुम्  ईशं दक्षिणामूर्ति देवं
जनन मरण दुःखच् छेद दक्षं नमामि॥२॥

Transliteration (iTrans)

vaTa viTapi samIpe bhUmi bhAge niShaNNaM
sakala muni janAnAM j~nAna dAtAram ArAt |
tri bhuvana gurum  IshaM dakShiNAmUrti devaM
janana maraNa duHkhach Cheda dakShaM namAmi||2||

Meaning

I worship that Dakshinamurthy, who was seated on a place near the banyan tree, where all the sages were sitting near the giver of knowledge, the guru of the three worlds, the Lord as Dakshinamurthy,  the expert in removing births, deaths and sorrows.

அறிவை அளிப்பவரின் அருகில் முனிவர்கள் அனைவரும் சூழ்ந்திருந்த ஆலமரத்திற்கு அருகில் ஒரு இடத்தில் அமர்ந்திருந்த தட்சிணாமூர்த்தியை நான் வணங்குகிறேன், மூன்று உலகங்களின் குரு,  இறைவன் தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, பிறப்பு, இறப்பு மற்றும் துக்கங்களை நீக்குவதில் நிபுணர்.

Dakshinamurthy with his four disciples: Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana and Sanatkumara. The one under his foot is Apasmāra, a dwarf who represents spiritual ignorance and nonsensical speech. He is also known as Muyalaka or Muyalakan.

गुरोस् तु मौनं व्याख्यानं शिष्यास् तुच्  छिन्न संशयाः ॥३॥

Meaning

It is a strange picture to behold; at the root of the banyan tree are seated aged disciples in front of a young Guru,. He is silent, in His exposition of knowledge; and in removing the doubts from the minds of his disciples.

Meaning in Tamil

இது ஒரு விசித்திரமான காட்சி; ஆலமரத்தின் வேரில் ஒரு இளம் குருவின் முன் வயதான சீடர்கள் அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். குரு அறிவை  மௌனமாக  விளக்குகிறார்; அவருடைய சீஷர்களின் மனதில் இருந்து சந்தேகங்களை நீக்குகின்றன.

Meaning

He is a receptacle to all knowledge, medicine to all the diseases of worldly bondage, and a Guru to all the worlds; Salutations to that Sri Dakshinamurthy.

Meaning

Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy who is absolute consciousness, the great god, who sits at the root of the banyan Tree, and who is embodiment of existence, consciousness and bliss.

முழுமையான அறிவு சொரூபமாக  ஆலமரத்தின் வேரில் அமர்ந்திருக்கும் பெரிய கடவுளாகிய ஸ்ரீ தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, உண்மை (சத்), அறிவு (சித்), ஆனந்த  உருவகமாக இருக்கின்றார். அவருக்கு எமது வணக்கங்கள்.

Meaning
Salutations to that Dakshinamurthy, who pervades in the different forms of god, guru and the self, but (without division) like the ether.

Dakshinamurthy Stotram

This hymn was written by Adhi Shankaracharya who has written many stotras. Stotras are generally prayers to deities. Most of the stotras of Hindu gods, which are in the form of description of anthropomorphic forms, or mythological deeds of those gods. But although Dakshinamurthy Stotram is written as a Stotram, it contains essence of Vedic philosophy of non-duality in the frame of the tradition of Advaita Vedanta.

Repeated chanting and/or meditating on the meaning of these verses is expected to help a spiritual practitioner of Advaita vedanta get thoroughly established in a non-dual experience.

Adi Shankaracharya was an Indian philosopher and theologian who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. Shankara is his name. Acharya means teacher. He is credited with unifying and establishing the main currents of thought in Hinduism. He established four Maths: Dvaraka Pitha, the Govardhana matha and Badri and the Kanchi Peetham to propagate his philosophy. These mathas are still in existence and active. The successive heads of the Kanchi and all other major Hindu Advaita tradition monasteries have been called Shankaracharya leading to some confusion as to who wrote which book. To distinguish the original Shankaracharya from others he is sometimes called Adi Shankaracharya. The chronology stated in Kanchi matha texts recognises five major Shankaras: Adi, Kripa, Ujjvala, Muka and Abhinava. There may have been more of them. Some of the texts attributed to Adi Shankaracharya may have been written by the other Shankaracharyas.

But we know for sure that this stotram was written by Adhi Shankaracharya because one of his immediate disciples wrote a commentary on this hymn.

Even during Shankara's time, this stotra was difficult to comprehend and it became necessary for his disciples, Sureshwaracharya to write a commentary called Manasollasa. D.S.Subramaniya wrote a commentary on the Manasollasa in two volumes running into 1200 pages. There are a large number of books and commentaries on this commentary itself. 

Shankara is believed to have lived around 500 BC. This would place him as a contemporary of Buddha. He is believed to have died at the age of 32.

It is customary to recite this Shaantipaadah from Svetasvatara Upanishad (6-18) before the stotram.

तं ह देवमात्मबुद्धिप्रकाशं

Svetasvatara (6-18)

Meaning:

He who creates this universe in the beginning and He whom the Vedas gloriously praise and sing about, in Him I take refuge in the firm faith and belief that my intellect may shine with knowledge of Brahman (Self Knowledge). Om Peace, Peace, Peace.

Meaning in Tamil

ஆரம்பத்தில் இந்த பிரபஞ்சத்தை உருவாக்கியவர் மற்றும் வேதங்கள் யாரைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடுகின்றனவோ, அவரிடம் நான் பிரம்ம (ஆத்ம அறிவு) அறிவால் என் புத்தி பிரகாசிக்கக்கூடும் என்ற உறுதியான நம்பிக்கையில்  தஞ்சம் அடைகிறேன். ஓம் அமைதி, அமைதி, அமைதி.

Verse 1

विश्वं दर्पण दृश्यमान नगरी तुल्यं निज आन्तर्गतं

पश्यन्न् आत्मनि मायया बहिर् इव उद्भूतं यथा निद्रया ।

यः साक्षात् कुरुते प्रबोध समये स्व आत्मानम् एव आद्वयं

तस्मै श्री गुरु मूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥१॥

vishvaM darpaNa dRRishyamAna nagarI tulyaM nija AntargataM
pashyann Atmani mAyayA bahir iva udbhUtaM yathA nidrayA |
yaH sAkShAt kurute prabodha samaye sva AtmAnam eva AdvayaM
tasmai shrI guru mUrtaye nama idaM shrI dakShiNAmUrtaye ||1||

Meaning

Just like the image of a city seen in a mirror, the world is within the Atman. But the world is seen as outside oneself. This due to Maya or ignorance projecting the world outside of the self. This illusion is like seeing something which is not real as in a dream. One sees the identity of the external world with the non-dual experience of one's own Atman, clearly during spiritual awakening. Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru. 

Meaning in Tamil

ஒரு கண்ணாடியில் ஒரு நகரத்தின் உருவம் பதிந்து இருப்பதுபோல, உலகம் ஆத்மாவில் பதிந்து உள்ளது. மாயை அல்லது அறியாமை காரணமாக உலகம் சுயத்திற்கு (self) வெளியே வெளிப்படுகிறது. இந்த மாயையினால் ஏற்படுவது  ஒரு கனவில் உண்மையானதல்லாத ஒன்றைப் பார்ப்பது போன்றது. ஆன்மீக ஞானம் அடைந்தபின் ஒருவர் தனது சொந்த ஆத்மாவின்  இரண்டு அற்ற விரிவாக்கத்துடன் வெளி உலகின் அடையாளத்தைக் காண்கிறார். எங்கள் உள் குரு யாரோ அவருக்கு வணக்கம். ஸ்ரீ தட்சிணாமூர்த்திக்கு வணக்கம்.

Note:

ब्रह्म सत्यं जगत् मिथ्या

In his teaching, Shankara asserts that Brahman is real (satyam)and the universe is mythya. Mythya is not the opposite of satyam. Satyam cannot be negated but mythya can be. Typical example of mythya in vedantic texts is the superimposition of snake on a rope in dim light. The rope was real. But when someone doubted it to be a snake in darkness, rope was negated and the snake was asserted. At that point in time snake was real and it evoked fear in the mind of the seer. But when the light came it was found that what he saw was a rope and not a snake. At this time snake negated and rope is the truth. Brahman is changeless but universe is subject to change. According to Shankara, the universe is superimposed on Brahman like the snake being superimposed on the rope. He also asserts that Brahman and Atman (individual soul) are not different from one another. He further asserts that when a person gets enlightened he will realise this reality. He puts this view in several places in this hymn.


Verse 2

बीजस्या अन्तर् इव अङ्कुरो जगत् इदं प्राङ्ग निर्विकल्पं पुनः

माया कल्पित देश काल कलना वैचित्र्य चित्री कृतम् ।

मायावि इव विजृम्भयति अपि महा योगि इव यः स्व इच्छया

तस्मै श्रीगुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्रीदक्षिणामूर्तये ॥२॥

bIjasyA antar iva a~Nkuro jagat idaM prA~Nga nirvikalpaM punaH
mAyA kalpita desha kAla kalanA vaicitrya citrI kRRitam |
mAyAvi iva vijRRimbhayati api mahA yogi iva yaH sva ichChayA
tasmai shrIgurumUrtaye nama idaM shrIdakShiNAmUrtaye ||2||

Meaning

He unfolds  the world as a play created by a magician or a Mahayogi, like a sprout within a seed which transforms its prior changeless state, into a tree to appear differentiated due to change in space and time, with endless varieties of pictures over it; all due to the power of His Maya; Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru. 

Meaning in Tamil

ஒரு விதைக்குள் ஒரு முளை இருந்தும் அது மாற்றமற்ற நிலையில் இருக்கின்றது. விதையை மண்ணில் போட்டு நீர் ஊற்றினால்  (அது ஒரு மந்திரவாதி விதையிலிருந்து மாங்கண்டை க் காட்டுவது போல) அது ஒரு மரமாகவோ அல்லது செடியாகவோ மாற்றமடைகிறது. இடம் கால மாற்றத்தால் வேறுபட்டு விதை ஒரு மரமாகத் தோன்றுவது போல இறைவன்,  முடிவில்லாத பலவிதமான காட்சிகளுடன் உலகத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்; அனைத்தும் அவரது மாயையின் சக்தியினால் தான்; குருவின் வடிவத்தில்இருக்கும், ஸ்ரீ தட்சிணாமூர்த்திக்கு  வணக்கங்கள்.

Note: Maya

 Maya

Maya literally means ‘illusion’ or ‘magic’. In Hindu concepts Maya denotes something that exists but it is subject to changes and therefore it is spiritually unreal (mithya). Universe is constantly changing and therefore it considered as unreal due to Maya. The root cause of Maya is ignorance. When one gets the wisdom he will be able to discriminate between the real and mithya.

According to Hindu concepts the saguna Brahman (Brahman with attributes, also known as Iswara) creates the phenomenal world with the help of Maya. In this sense Maya is conceived as a power of Iswara.

Maya is also the cause of the cycle of birth and death.


Verse 3

यस्य एव स्फुरणं सदा आत्मकम् असत् कल्प अर्थकं भासते

साक्षात् तत् त्वम् असि इति वेद वचसा यो बोधयति आश्रितान् ।

यत् साक्षात् करणाद् भवेन् न पुनरावृत्तिर् भवाम् भोनिधौ

तस्मै श्री गुरु मूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥३॥

Meaning

By His throb alone which is of the nature of eternal awareness, the unreal forms get their meanings and appear over the mind, this knowledge of the Atman spoken of in the vedas as "tat-tvam-asi" is imparted by Him to those who surrender to Him; With the realization of Him, the delusion of the sea of worldly existence and the cycle of birth and death will come to an end. Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

nAnAch Chidra ghaTa udara sthita mahA dIpa prabhA bhAsvaraM
j~nAnaM yasya tu chakShur Adi karaNa dvArA vahiH spandate |

Meaning

He is luminous like a lamp kept in the belly of a pot with many holes. The knowledge throbs out through the eyes and other sense organs and shines as “I know”. He makes the entire universe to shine after him; Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥५॥

Meaning

Those who consider the "I " as body, breath, senses, changing intellect, or the void are deluded like women, children, blind and the stupid. They only talk much but they vehemently assert their points. He (the Lord) destroys the great delusion created by the play of the power of Maya. Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

प्राग् अस्वाप्सम् इति प्रबोध समये यः प्रत्यभिज्ञायते

तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥६॥

Meaning

The self which is in sleep becomes pure existence because of the absence of the veiling power of Maya, like the sun or moon covered by eclipse. And on waking one recognizes, “I have slept well till now”; Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

व्यावृत्तासु अनु वर्तमानम् अहम् इति अन्तः स्फुरन्तं सदा ।

स्व आत्मानं प्रकटी करोति भजतां यो मुद्रया भद्रया

तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥७॥

Meaning

Sri Dakshinamurthy by his hand gesture of Chinmudra(union of thumb and the fore-finger – symbol of non-duality of Atman and Brahman manifests Himself to his devotees; always whether in boyhood (youth, adult, old age  etc.) and other stages or waking, (sleeping, dreaming) and other states and likewise in all conditions the Atman always shines as the "I" within and free from all conditions and being in all conditions. Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

Note: Chinmudra
Chinmudra is holding the thumb and index finger together and extending the remaining 3 fingers out. This is a Yogic posture during meditation etc. Thumb finger symbolises Brahman and the index finger the Atman or individual soul. Joining together of these two fingers indicates the identity of Brahman and Atman. Middle finger denotes ego, the ring finger the Maya and the little finger karma. In order for a Self to be in union with Brahman it should get rid of ego, Maya and karma.

In some texts it is said that the three fingers denote three gunas. Middle finger denotes satva(purity, wisdom and true understanding),  the ring finger rajas(action and passion), and the little finger tamas, (inertia, lethargy and darkness). Wise need to transcend these states to attain wisdom. It is also said in the scriptures that one may experience all the three gunas within one day and a person must be in any one of the three gunas at any time. Besides the food one consumes can influence the guna after the meal. So it can be said that a wise person will try to be in satvic state.
First analogy seems to be more appropriate.

Verse 8

विश्वं पश्यति कार्य  कारण तया स्वस्वामि सम्बन्धतः

शिष्य आचार्य तया तथ एव पितृ पुत्रादि आत्मना भेदतः ।

स्वप्ने जाग्रति वा य एष पुरुषो माया परिभ्रामितः

तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥८॥

vishvaM pashyati kArya  kAraNa tayA svasvAmi sambandhataH
shiShya AcArya tayA tatha eva pitRRi putrAdi AtmanA bhedataH |
svapne jAgrati vA ya eSha puruSho mAyA paribhrAmitaH
tasmai shrI gurumUrtaye nama idaM shrI dakShiNAmUrtaye ||8||

Meaning

The Self (Atman) deluded by Maya, sees in dreaming and waking state, the diversity of the universe in terms of relationships, such as cause and effect, property and the proprietor, disciple and teacher, father and son. Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the form of  Guru.

इति आभाति चर अचर आत्मकम् इदं यस्य एव मूर्ति अष्टकम्

नान्यत् किञ्चन विद्यते विमृशतां यस्मात् परस्माद् विभोः

तस्मै श्री गुरुमूर्तये नम इदं श्री दक्षिणामूर्तये ॥९॥

bhUr ambhAMsy analo anilo ambaram aharnAtho himAMshu pumAn

His eight fold forms are the moving and non-moving universe, appearing as earth, water, fire, air, space, sun, moon and jiva; being supreme and all-pervading, there exists nothing beyond him, except for the Yogis who meditate on Him as eternal being everywhere. siddhyet tat punar aShTadhA pariNataM ca ishvaryam avyAhatam ||10||

Meaning

Since the nature of the Self is made clear in this hymn, by hearing it, contemplating on its meaning, meditating on it, and reciting it, one becomes endowed with the knowledge of the divine nature; perhaps the divine nature will arise within him and after that the eight fold super normal divine powers will manifest unimpeded.

6) Prakamya – ability to obtain anything desired, and realising dreams. 
7) Isitva – the power of lordliness.
