 CHAPTER 17

Now Chapter seventeen. THREEFOLD DIVISION OF FAITH

Krishna

VERSE 17.1

Aphorism

Arjuna asked, "O Krishna, when men sacrifice to the gods with faith but discard the injunctions of the scriptures, what is the nature of their devotion? Is it sattva, rajas, or tamas?"

Note:

The three gunas, or modes of nature, are sattva, rajas, and tamas. Sattva is the mode of goodness and purity, rajas is the mode of passion, and tamas is the mode of ignorance and inertia.

At the end of the preceding chapter, the Lord stated that those who discard scriptural injunctions to act on their own desires attain neither perfection nor spiritual knowledge. Arjuna now asks about the fate of those who worship with faith yet remain ignorant of the scriptures.

VERSE 17.2

Aphorism

The faith of human beings is of three kinds, each born of their individual nature: sattvic (goodness), rajasic (passion), and tamasic (ignorance). Now hear about these from Me.

Note:

Individual Nature: A person's inborn character is molded by their past karma and cannot easily be changed. However, through resolute determination, the study of scriptures, the guidance of a guru, and divine grace, one can transform their character and acquire a divine spiritual nature—just as many have done in the past.

Three Kinds: These three gunas (qualities of nature) are not limited to human beings; they govern everything within Prakriti (material Nature).

Meaning

The Lord said.

त्रिविधा — three kinds; भवति — is; श्रद्धा — faith; देहिनाम् — of the embodied; सा — this; स्वभावजा — born of one's own nature; सात्त्विकी — one with mode of goodness; राजसी — one with mode of passion; च — and; एव — thus; तामसी — one with mode of inertia; च — and; इति — thus; ताम् — it; शृणु — listen;

Aphorism

O Bharata, the faith of each person accords with their natural disposition. A person is made of their faith; as a person's faith is, so are they.

Note:

Natural Disposition: Your Svabhāva is your innate psychological makeup—your inherent temperament, tendencies, and mental traits. It is not just your personality, but the deep-seated inner nature with which you are born. It is formed by Past Karma and Vāsanās and the the three Guṇas.

Faith: Śraddhā means something deeper: an intuitive, heart-based alignment with Ultimate Reality (Brahman). It is an unshakeable inner conviction and reverence that exists prior to, or deeper than, rational arguments. The intellect can analyze, doubt, or rationalize, but Śraddhā is the underlying orientation of your spirit.

Aphorism

This threefold austerity, practised with supreme faith by steadfast men, without desire for fruit, is said to be the nature of the mode of goodness.

Note:
Threefold austerity: of body, speech, and mind. The "threefold austerity" referred to in this verse points back to the three dimensions of human action detailed in the immediately preceding verses (14, 15, and 16).

Austerity of the Body (Śārīraṁ Tapa - Verse 14): Worshiping the divine, teachers, and wise elders; maintaining cleanliness (external and internal); practicing simplicity, celibacy (brahmacharya); and practicing non-violence (ahimsa).

Austerity of Speech (Vāṅ-maya Tapa - Verse 15): Speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and non-agitating to others, coupled with the regular recitation of spiritual texts.

Austerity of the Mind (Mānasa Tapa - Verse 16): Cultivating mental serenity, gentleness, silence (control over internal dialogue), self-control, and purity of purpose.

Krishna explains that when these three forms of austerity are practiced with supreme, transcendental faith (śraddhayā parayā), by steadfast individuals who are entirely unattached to material rewards or fruits of their labor, that practice is situated firmly in the mode of goodness (sāttvika).

VERSE 17.23

Aphorism

“Om Tat Sat” has been declared as the threefold designation of Brahman. By this, in the beginning, the Brahmins, the Vedas, and the sacrifices were created.

Note:

In the next three verses, the Lord explains the significance of these three words.

The Threefold Designation: Om, Tat, and Sat represent three distinct aspects of the Absolute Truth. Om signifies the primal sound and the transcendent aspect of Brahman; Tat points to the impersonal, all-pervading nature of Brahman (often translated as "That"); and Sat represents eternal existence, reality, and goodness. Together, they encompass the totality of the spiritual realm.

The statement that "in the beginning, the Brahmins, the Vedas, and the sacrifices were created" by this threefold designation means that the entire order of spiritual knowledge, ritual action, and the priesthood tasked with preserving it originated from the foundational vibration of the Absolute.

In Vedic philosophy, invoking these three words at the beginning of spiritual rites, sacrifices, or acts of charity acts as a corrective and an elevation. It reminds practitioners that all sacred duties are ultimately rooted in and dedicated to the Supreme.

Meaning

ॐ तत् सत् — Om that being; इति — thus; निर्देशः — designation; ब्रह्मणः — Brahman; त्रिविधः — threefold; स्मृतः — remembered; ब्राह्मणाः — Brahmanas; तेन — by this; वेदाः — Vedas; च — and; यज्ञाः — sacrifices; च — and; विहिताः — ordained; पुरा — formerly;

VERSE 17.25

Aphorism

With the utterance of "Tat" and without desiring results, those seeking liberation perform various acts of sacrifice, austerity, and charity.

Notes:

The Meaning of "Tat": In Vedic philosophy, Tat translates to "That," signifying the ultimate, impersonal Absolute or Brahman. When spiritual practitioners invoke Tat while performing actions, they remind themselves that everything belongs to the Supreme and is not meant for personal ego or worldly gratification.

Acting "without desiring results" (nishkama karma) is central to the teaching. If a person performs charity, austerity, or sacrifice expecting praise, material rewards, or heavenly pleasure, their action remains bound to the material world. By releasing the fruits of action, practitioners purify their minds.

Those "seeking liberation" use these prescribed acts not as currency for future benefits, but as instruments of inner purification. Detached action breaks the cycle of karma, gradually steering the seeker away from ego-driven desires and toward spiritual freedom.

Meaning

तत् — "Tat”, that; इति — thus; अनभिसन्धाय — without desiring; फलम् — fruit; यज्ञ — sacrifice; तपः — austerity; क्रियाः — acts; दान — charity; क्रियाः — acts; च — and; विविधाः— various; क्रियन्ते — are done; मोक्ष — liberation; काङ्क्षिभिः — desirers.

Anvaya:

Aphorism

The word "Sat" denotes reality and goodness; similarly, O Partha, it describes an auspicious action.

Note:

Reality and Goodness (Bhava and Sadhu): In Sanskrit, Sat derives from the root अस्, which means "to be" or "to exist." Therefore, it fundamentally denotes existence, truth, and ultimate reality. Beyond mere existence, it carries a moral dimension, representing goodness, virtue, and what is genuinely wholesome.

Auspicious Actions (Prasaste Karmani): When applied to human endeavors, Sat signifies actions that are noble, auspicious, and aligned with righteousness. Actions done for the welfare of others or in service of the divine are inherently "Sat" because they reflect higher truth rather than temporary egoistic desires.

By addressing Arjuna as "Partha" (son of Pritha), the speaker invokes a lineage of nobility and duty, reminding him that a person of noble birth and character should only associate their life and actions with that which is real, good, and auspicious.

meaning

सत् भावे — in reality; साधु भावे — in goodness; च — and; सत् — being; इति — thus; एतत् — this; प्रयुज्यते — is spoken; प्रशस्ते — in praisworthy; कर्मणि — actions; तथा — also; सत् — Being; शब्दः — word; पार्थ — O Partha; युज्यते — is used.

With sandhi:

Anvaya:

Aphorism

Steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity, and charity is also called "Sat," as is any action performed for the sake of the Supreme.

Note:

Meaning

यज्ञे — in sacrifice; तपसि — in austerity; दाने — in charity; च — and; स्थितिः — steadyness; सत् — real; इति — thus; च — and; उच्यते — is called; कर्म — action; च — and; एव — even; तत् — that; अर्थीयम् — meaning; सत् — Being; इति — thus; एव — even; अभिधीयते — is called.

VERSE 17.28

Aphorism

Whatever is done without faith—whether sacrifice, charity, or penance, or any other ritual—is called asat, or "non-existent," O Partha. It is of no value here or hereafter.

Notes:

Non-existent: It is as good as not performing those actions at all.
Here or hereafter: In this present life or in future births.
This chapter exhorts devotees to cultivate the mode of goodness (sattva) with unwavering faith while avoiding actions rooted in the modes of passion (rajas) and inertia (tamas). Uttering "Om Tat Sat" purifies the mind, ultimately leading to the realization of Brahman.

Meaning

अश्रद्धया — without faith; हुतम् — offered; दत्तम् — given; तपः — austerity; तप्तम् — suffered; कृतम् — done; च — and; यत् — which; असत् — untrue; इति — thus; उच्यते — is said; पार्थ — O Partha; न — not; च — and; तत् — that; प्रेत्य — having gone; नो — not; इह — here;

With sandhi:

Anvaya:

End of Chapter

Thus in the Blessed Gita, the Essence of the Upanishads, the Science of Brahman, and the Scripture of Yoga, the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna ends the seventeenth chapter, entitled THREEFOLD DIVISION OF FAITH.
