Bhagavad Gita Chapter 15
CHAPTER 15
Now Chapter fifteen – THE WAY TO THE SUPREME SELF.
VERSE 15.1
Aphorism
The Blessed Lord said: There is said to be an imperishable Aśvattha tree whose roots grow upward and whose branches extend downward, and whose leaves are the Vedas. One who knows this tree is a knower of the Vedas.
Note:
The Cosmic Tree (Aśvattha): The phenomenal world of samsāra is compared to an Aśvattha tree that is eternal yet changes every moment.
Roots Above: Its supreme root is Saguna Brahman (or the unmanifested Avyakta with Māyā), situated high above as the eternal first cause.
Branches and Parts: Its lower-extending branches represent cosmic principles like the intellect (mahat), ego (ahaṅkāra), and subtle elements, while the Vedas act as its protecting leaves, sustaining the tree through teachings of duty, merit, and demerit.
Liberation: Individuals can cut down this illusory tree of perpetual birth and death only for themselves—not the world at large—using the sharp sword of Self-knowledge to attain supreme liberation from which there is no return.

Anvaya:

VERSE 15.2

Aphorism
The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature;
![]() |
| Roots down |
Note:
The Lord continues with the description of the cosmic tree in order to create in the aspirant intense dispassion leading to love and knowledge of the Lord.
This verse uses the metaphor of an inverted banyan tree to describe material existence as a self-sustaining illusion that binds the soul.
Branches: Represent diverse species across higher and lower realms, navigated via karma.
Nourishment: Sustained by the three modes of material nature (gunas).
Twigs: Sensory objects (form, sound, taste, etc.) that stimulate worldly desires.
Secondary Roots: Human actions (karma) that anchor the soul deeper into material bondage, requiring detachment to cut free.
अधः — below; च — and; ऊर्ध्वम् — above; प्रसृताः — extended; तस्य — its; शाखाः — branches; गुण — by the modes; प्रवृद्धाः — nourished; विषय — objects of the senses; प्रवालाः — sprouts; अधः — below; च — and; मूलानि — the roots; अनुसन्ततानि — spread into many branches; कर्म — action; अनुबन्धीनि — bound; मनुष्य लोके — in the world of humans.
With sandhi:

VERSE 15. 3
Aphorism
Its true form cannot be perceived in this world, nor can its beginning, its end, or its foundation.
Note:
The sentence is completed in the next verse.
The illusory, dream-like nature of material existence makes its beginning, end, and middle imperceptible through sensory experience. Because its roots, latent desires (vāsanās), and past actions perpetually sustain one another, this firmly rooted tree of samsāra can only be destroyed and uprooted through intense renunciation, discrimination, and the strong weapon of non-attachment.
Meaning
न — not; रूपम् — the form; अस्य — of this (tree); इह — here; तथा — so; उपलभ्यते — is obtained; न — not; अन्तः — end; न — not; च — and; आदिः — beginning; न — not; च — and; सम्प्रतिष्ठा — the foundation; अश्वत्थम् — banyan tree; एनम् — this; सु विरूढ — well-grown; मूलम् — roots; असङ्ग — non-attachment; शस्त्रेण — by the weapon; दृढेन — strong; छित्त्वा — cutting.

VERSE 15. 4

Aphorism
Thereafter, one must seek that supreme goal from which, having gone, one never returns to this material world.
Notes:
After cutting down the illusion of material existence through detachment, a seeker must focus entirely on attaining the Supreme Being. This ultimate spiritual destination breaks the cycle of rebirth, and it is reached by surrendering to the primordial source from whom all creation and cosmic activity flow.

VERSE 15.7
Aphorism
An eternal portion of the Supreme Self becomes the living soul (jīva) in the material world, struggling with material nature (Prakṛti) and pulling the mind and five senses toward worldly existence.
Note:
The individual soul (jīva) is an eternal aspect or reflection of the Supreme Lord, appearing separate only due to the limiting conditions (upādhis) of ignorance and the material body. Just like a reflection of the sun in water or the space contained within a jar, this limitation is temporary; when ignorance or the conditioning is removed, the soul merges back into the Supreme Self and never returns to material existence.
Meaning
मम — my; एव — even; अंशः — part; जीव लोके — in the world of living things; जीव भूतः — living entity; सनातनः — eternal; मनः — mind; षष्ठानि — the six; इन्द्रियाणि — senses; प्रकृति — Prakiriti; स्थानि — placed; कर्षति — draws.

VERSE 15.8
Aphorism
When the embodied soul takes on a body or leaves it, it takes these senses and the mind along and departs, just as the wind carries fragrances from their sources.
Note:
The Lord: Refers to the individual soul (jīva) governing its body and senses, rather than the Supreme Lord (Brahman).
Takes up a body: Assumes a new physical form to reap the results of past karma.
Takes these: The mind and sense organs. When the physical body is cremated or buried at death, the subtle body—consisting of the mind and senses—accompanies the soul, much like the wind carries away fragrances. Upon rebirth, the soul enters a new body equipped with this subtle apparatus, while past memories are wiped clean.

Entering the earth, I sustain all beings by My energy; and becoming the watery moon, I nourish all plants (or juices).
Notes:
Entered into the Earth: This does not mean that the Lord entered the Earth at a specific point in time after it came into existence; rather, it signifies that the Lord's energy pervades and sustains the Earth.

Becoming the fire of life in the bodies of all living creatures, I unite with the vital breaths—prana and apana—to digest the four kinds of food.
Note:
Vaishvanara: The digestive fire in the stomach. Derived from vishva ("universe") and nara ("man"), it refers to the "Universal Being" or the cosmic presence within every individual. In the Rigveda, Vaishvanara is a primary epithet of Agni, the fire god.
Four Kinds of Food: Food categorized by how it is consumed:
Chewed (Chavya): Foods requiring mastication, like solid meals.
Sucked (Chosya): Foods extracted by suction, like sugarcane or fruit pulp.

Notes:
The Heart (Hridaya): Not the biological organ that pumps blood, but the spiritual seat of consciousness (Hridaya).
Alternative View: In standard Vedic commentaries (such as Shankara's bhashya on the Bhagavad Gita (15.15), "heart" (hridi) refers to the subtle inner instrument—the mind and intellect (Antahkarana)—where divine consciousness illuminates memory, knowledge, and reasoning.

Aphorism
Besides these two, there is a Supreme Being—called the Supreme Self (Paramatma)—the imperishable Lord who enters, pervades, and sustains the three worlds.
Note:
Sustains (Bibharti): The Supreme Lord is the ultimate maintainer and preserver of the universe.
Supreme Self (Paramatma): The Divine Spirit—transcending both individual bound souls and material nature.
Three Worlds (Loka-Traya):
Bhur (Bhūloka): The terrestrial/earthly realm.

VERSE 15.18
Aphorism
Because I surpass the perishable and am higher even than the imperishable, I am extolled in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Self.
Notes:
This verse is the climax of Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga). It resolves a fundamental question: Is God the physical world, the individual soul, or something else?
1. "I surpass the perishable (Kshara)." The perishable realm consists of all physical bodies, material matter, and objects in the universe subject to birth, decay, change, and death. The Supreme Self is not bound by physical form, time, or the laws of nature (Prakriti). The Supreme is completely transcendental to the temporary, changing universe.
2. "I am higher even than the imperishable (Akshara)." The imperishable refers to the unchanging, eternal aspect—the individual souls (Jivas) in their unmanifest or liberated state, as well as the unmanifest cause of matter. Even the unmanifest potential of the cosmos depends on the Supreme Self. The Supreme Reality is the sustainer and ruler of all souls.
3. "I am extolled in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Self (Purushottama)." The "Supreme Personality" or "Highest Self". Krishna notes that this identity isn't a new concept—it is acclaimed in both popular sacred tradition (लोके, the Smritis) and ultimate spiritual scriptures (वेदे, the Vedas and Upanishads).

VERSE 15.19
Aphorism
He who is undeluded knows Me as the Supreme Person and thus knows all. He worships Me with his entire being, O descendant of Bharata.
Notes:
This Verse bridges the gap between Knowledge (Jnana) and Devotion (Bhakti). It teaches that complete, unclouded understanding of the Divine doesn't lead to cold detachment—it leads directly to wholehearted, loving alignment with the Supreme Being.
Undeluded (Asammoḍha): The "undeluded" person who has pierced through the veil of illusion (Maya). They no longer confuse the changing physical body (Kshara) or even individual egoic consciousness with the ultimate Divine Reality.
"Knows Me as the Supreme Person and thus knows all (Sarva-vit)": If you understand gold, you understand all gold ornaments; if you understand water, you understand every wave. By knowing Purushottama—the ultimate source and sustainer of the cosmos—one knows the underlying principle of all existence.
"He worships Me with his entire being (Sarva-bhāvena)": Sarva-bhāvena means devoted with every dimension of one's consciousness—intellect, emotion, action, and spirit. Knowledge (Jnana) naturally transforms into total devotion (Bhakti). When you realize the Supreme Reality is the ultimate source of all life and love, worship becomes a spontaneous, wholehearted state of living rather than a forced ritual.
